Creativity From Paper to Technological
Over the years in high school, I’ve been showing my creative side of myself.
The two classes of art I’ve taken are visual arts and digital media. I put a lot of effort in these classes to make a piece of art out of paper or an image of anything. I did numerous projects in those years from drawing, hands on art to technical and digital based, yet challenging to show my professionalism. Though I did have struggles in those classes in times. I learned two different art styles from visual to digital.
I started off in my freshman year of high school, the fall semester I took visual arts. One project I remembered was the grid line drawing. For this, I made grid lines on paper by using a ruler to make the lines exact. Next thing was I chose any image as long as it was something appropriate and my image was a motorcycle. I then started drawing grid lines on the motorcycle image to see what was going to draw where. Finally, I drew on the grid paper of what sections of the motorcycle that needed to be drawn. This project took a lot of work to get the image to look just like the image grid that was drawn on.
It was then spring semester, I switched from visual arts to digital design. The transition made me feel as though I missed visual arts so much. When I first started digital design, I didn’t know what to expect, it felt as though it was a surprise class.
I did projects from three programs, Adobe Illustrator, iMovie, and Flash. I had trouble with Adobe Illustrator, the project was make a picture of yourself look like a cartoon.
The trouble I had was layers, I kept doing everything all in one layer causing to look like
a mess. I did manage to understand to use Illustrator sometime before the year ended.
The next project was make a documentary of California life. I first had to write about my California life in which I did. Then I had to choose a few images off the internet to use in my documentary and the rest had to be images of myself. I did do some images which were tracings and sketches. I didn’t finish the project at all because it was just too difficult for me to do. Final thing was make animation from Flash. I had a lot of trouble with animation, for example I wanted an animation of a image showing like if it were a Looney Tunes intro on television. I didn’t understand animation and found it to be a challenge.
Sophomore year, I understand school now and what to expect. I’ve learned the routines of school on how classes run. Just like my freshman year, I started the fall semester with visual arts. In that class, one project was make a graffiti code name. My codename was Rockstar since I had real interest in listening to metal. I was really creative in this project although through creating it I used a lot of dark colors most of the time instead of bright. Next project was I made a sign. For my sign, I made a danger sign in dark colors with a skull and flames. The process was draw how the sign will look like and
then drew on the cardboard that was going to be my sign. I mixed paint colors to get the ones I needed which were black and orange. Then when I was finished, I presented the sign to my class.
The next semester, another transition, I knew what happened, from visual arts I go to digital design once again. The projects I did there were using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The first project was I made a magazine cover by using Photoshop. I made a martial artist magazine that had swords and nunchucks. To make the magazine cover appealing, I put red paint on the swords to give it some detail. Another project was making a map of my neighborhood by using Adobe Illustrator. I put camoflague on the map and many other things to show my neighborhood. The end of the year assignment was make a comic strip of what I want to do in my junior year which was quick.
How time flies and art changes, my junior year came in. My art class was digital design and the environment in 11th grade was different than being in lower division. In the art, the program used was Keynote. My first project was the moods project, now in this project, I typed out five different moods, each one had an image. Looking up the images, I experimented with using the internet and the programs to use. I had to find appropriate images that matched the moods, especially my mood gothic. For that one, I put pictures of a cemetery and the grim reaper, and the finishing touches were lyrics in a certain font in a red color from a modern day Norwegian band. Another thing was data to images, for this I got a statistic and to represent it was using Photoshop. By using this, I learned different tools from Photoshop such as one tool where I took out the background of an image piece by piece.
Spring was now visual arts. I did 2 projects for visual arts. The first project was battle of the brands. I worked in a group and what I did was screen printing which was
to pour paint all over the design and then scratch it out. Then make buttons and a flier about our band. Last but not least present it to the entire class about the brand I did with my group. Another project was the tattoo project, it was a good project, but I used too much of my time to think about the tattoo design.
My senior year, this time digital design is both for fall and spring semester. All semester, I’ve been using Photoshop, though I knew it, there are some new features like layer masking, a fast way of eliminating an image’s background. A project done in Photoshop was my “What is art?” project. My first piece was make a heavy metal album that was vibrant. It took me time to use various colors of Photoshop to make the album and a fancy font to go along with it. Next thing was my comic book, I traced out images from a video game, yet found it difficult due to the background and other details. I then colored them in by using Photoshop and then put it back in Comic life and put the title and dialogue.
Overall my art experience in school has driven me to be more creative. I seem to think more digital art than visual art. I like both art styles, one of my favorite subjects in school, visual arts, but over the years with digital design, I was using my creativity into liking it. There are many concepts to follow, its not always just do something quickly then its art.
